Welcome to my world of snakes I hope you enjoy it

Snakes
Over the past years Snakes have become increasingley more popular as pets ( I dont like to use the term Pet as a snake is not something that will be content to be sat and fussed over ).
This I beleive is due to people becoming more aware of how safe snakes actually are.
More people die each year by bee stings than they do snake bites, and of course of over the 3000 different species of snakes in the world there is only 10% that are venemous and only a small portion of that are deadly to humans. Snakes bite Yes but only when provoked. Most people who get bit in the wild have most probably stood on them.
The same goes for the larger snakes such as the Boa's. There are plenty of myths about that people have become crushed to death by a constrictor but there is no pure evidence to support this, and it is common sense that any snake over 8ft should never be handled alone.
I myself have grew up in a sceptic world about these beautiful creatures but have learned to realise the real side to them and learn to appreciate them.
I currently own 4 snakes at the moment. A North Carolina corn snake (Elaphe Guttata) A Snow Corn and 2 Common boa constrictors (boa constrictor imperator). My family adore these including my 4 year old son, and hopefully this way he will grow to respect these creatures and live in harmony with them.
Please feel free to browse my site and i hope if you have any questions my site may answer them but remember im not a proffesional expert on snakes so i do recommend to anyone to buy a book or do some research first about the snake and decide what you want.

Purchasing a Snake

If you want to purchase a snake I strongly reccomend buying from either a reputable dealer, or a reputable private breeder.
A reputable dealer i use is http://www.reptilecentre.com These chaps are based in northampton and have a vast knowledge and have helped me in the best way possible. The latter I would also reccomend is a private breeder who deals in boas and other snakes if you would like a price from him you can email him here mailto:boaman71@aol.com .
When you purchase your snake if you dont know the dealer or breeder there are a few things to look out for, check for limpness in the body this could be a sign of broken bones or damaged body also check for the tongue, a healthy snake will regulary flick its tongue. check for any abrasions on the body or any scale damage and look for any signs of mites or ticks ( lumps on the body ). With constrictors check for good muscle tone to, If the snake looks lively and happy then it should be ok. With boas they can be prone to IBD (inclusion body disease), Most snakes that come from from trusted places wont have this but still be sure to keep it away from any other snakes for a while just to be sure.
The best snakes to start with are mainly corns, milks or rat snakes these are very docile and are not likely to stirke at you.
